Symbolism  (pronounced SIM-buh-liz-em)  is the use of one object or action (a symbol) to represent or suggest something else. German writer  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously defined true symbolism as that in which the particular represents the general. Broadly, the term symbolism may refer to the symbolic meaning or the practice of investing things with a symbolic meaning. Though often associated with religion and literature, symbolism is prevalent in everyday life. The use of  symbolism  and language, says Leonard Shengold, makes our minds flexible enough to grasp, master, and communicate thoughts and feelings (Delusions of Everyday Life, 1995). In Dictionary of Word Origins (1990), John Ayto points out that etymologically a  symbol  is something thrown together. The words ultimate source is Greek  sumballein  . . .. The notion of throwing or putting things together led on to the notion of contrast, and so  sumballein  came to be used for compare. From it was derived  sumbolon, which denoted an identifying token—because such tokens were compared with a counterpart to make sure they were genuine--and hence an outward sign of something. Examples and Observations [T]he symbolic elements in life have a tendency to run wild, like the vegetation in a tropical forest. The life of humanity can easily be overwhelmed by its symbolic accessories. . . . Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt degeneration; it is inherent in the very texture of human life. It used to symbolise the Virgin Mary and, before her, Venus, the pricking of its barbs being likened to the wounds of love. The association still survives in the common meaning of a bunch of roses (I love you). Flowers might be delicate and short-lived but they have acquired a vast range of unpredictably durable meanings, a whole bouquet of significances: affection, virtue, chastity, wantonness, religious steadfastness, transience. The modern multiplication of floral emblems and trademarks has, however, taken its toll. When the red rose can stand for the Labour Party, a box of chocolates and Blackburn Rovers FC, it seems fair to say that its symbolic potency has been somewhat diluted by over-use. Symbols, therefore, can enrich language by bringing it an array of different possible meanings, or they can reinforce a single meaning, as with images that constantly dehumanize. Lexington Books, 2008) Jung on the Range of Potential Symbols The history of symbolism shows that everything can assume symbolic significance: natural objects (like stones, plants, animals, men, mountains and valleys, sun and moon, wind, water, and fire), or man-made things (like houses, boats, or cars), or even abstract forms (like numbers, or the triangle, the square, and the circle). In fact, the whole cosmos is a potential symbol. The primary pollutants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons) react with sunlight to create ozone. This produces sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3.) These acids are stored in clouds, and when it rains, you have acid rain. Another way acid rain can be formed is by the burning of Fossil Fuels. Fossil Fuels are coal and oil from decomposed trees and plant material from thousands of years ago. Fossil Fuels are burned to generate electricity, releasing pollutants into the air. The places which get hit the hardest by acid rain are Norway, Sweden and Canada. But that doesnt mean that they are producing it all. Most pollutants that develop into acid rain come from Canada, Japan, the United States and Western Europe. Today, Britain releases almost as much sulfur dioxide as all of Western Europe combined. Japan is the only country in which power plants are required to reduce nitrogen oxide b y at least 75%, but the U.S. also has new pollution standards. These require that all new cars have a convertor to reduce the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons by as much as 96%. As I already said, acid rain does not always fall where it is produced. Often, the clouds that the acids are stored in get blown thousands of miles away. Acid can be transported not only by clouds, but by fog, gases, mist and dust as well. All rain has a natural acid in it, that would be there even if we had never polluted the earth. It is a type of acid from the carbon dioxide already in the air. This natural acid helps dissolve minerals, which lets plants use them more easily. The EPA, or the Environmental Protection Agency, tests water and determines the quality of it. Although they have tested much of the U. S., 78 % of rivers and 33 % of lakes are still to be tested. The EPA also determines if the water they test is dead, impaired, or reasonably clean. Based on state reports, only 15 % of rivers and 38 % of lakes are not impaired. Out of an EPA list of 18,770 impaired water sites, only 529 of them are polluted mostly by toxic point sources. A toxic point source is pollution from just one source, and non-point source pollution is ground run-off from several or many different places. A lake which is dead is a lake with absolutely no life in it whatsoever. By the early 1980s, tens of thousands of lakes were already dead. If acid rain is not stopped, 500,000 lakes will be dead before the year 2000. Acid rain is a major threat to all life everywhere. Measures have been taken to clean the United States water, such as the Clean Water Act, a law passed in 1972. The CWA promised clean water for the entire U. S. by 1983. It has been 12 years since the deadline, but our water is still polluted. Another way to test water is the pH factor, which you could do at home if you had a kit. It measures water and other liquids on a scale 0-14, 0 being the highest acidity and 14 being the lowest. Acid rain does a lot of damage, to animals, nature and even our own stone structures. Aluminum causes song birds to lay thin eggshells, harming the young birds inside in several ways. The coniferous trees in a forest are hit harder than other trees, although they may not show how badly they were hit. In Germany and Sweden, they have to spread lime over lakes to neutralize the acidity. Acid rain is yet another of the many horrible, perhaps unintentional problems that human beings have created. As with many of them, as soon as we realize it is hazardous to us and nature, it is either too late, or we dont know how to stop it. Huck's Inescapable Moral Dilemma Huck's Inescapable Moral Dilemma In the novel, Huck is faced with the dilemma of whether or not to return Jim, the runaway slave, back to Jims owner. He, at an early age, is faced with the decision that has plagued man for ages: choosing what is morally right, even though it is forbidden in society and popular culture. He goes against the fold and goes with what his heart tells him. Huck's predicament is Twains inescapable dilemma. In an essay by Roger Rosenblatt, entitled The Bill of Rights, Rosenblatt ends his essay with a single line: Downriver we ride together, as ever, free to go to hell. Rosenblatts final line in his essay makes an important point. It is not just Huck who is faced with decisions. Huckleberry Finn represents every person who has ever had to make a decision between what they feel is morally correct and what society perceives as right. Today Huck's dilemma with whether or not it is right to help free his eventual friend Jim can be compared with a doctors decision on whether or not to perform an a bortion. The drama series is all about the New Jersey Mafia leader named Tony Soprano and the complexities that he experiences as he attempts to manage the frequently incompatible necessities of his family life and the unlawful and immoral association he leads. Tony manages his own household as well as a very controversial organization. His troubles are said to be product of his complicated lifestyle which originated from his own family background. His mother was said to be a psychotic person who was even involved in a plot to murder him (Rucker, 2003). This scene is very emblematic in a sense that before the end of the series, Tony was said to be treated for a particular psychological disorder. While he tries to maintain an order inside the Soprano household, Tony is also the very one who contributes to the destruction and disorder of his family. He is described as unfaithful to his wife (Rucker, 2003). So many scenes suggest this theme. Among he most notable instances are when he made an argument with his own sister Janice and his own daughter, by which he tries to convince the two ladies to listen to him and follow what he commands (for he says that what he is doing is for their own sake and for the sake of their family). But no matter how his character tries to portray a defender of his family and his group, Tony fails to embody a heroic character as how others strangely claim. A hero never hurt his wife, his children, his mother or father, his uncle or even his friends. But Tony does all these things beginning from very small things that could inflict damage to any one of them. While he only cares for himself and only for himself, he acts and tries to make others believe that he is doing a very heroic act for the sake of protecting his family and his group (Gabbard, 2004). But the real thing is that, he is just doing these things to suit his own interests. Towards the end of the series, it says that all the criminal acts that Tony does are starting to hunt him (where all things turn out to be against what he plans and wants to happen). After tracking and crashing down all his enemies, Tony finds himself playing the character that he never imagined to be played by him. He becomes the person who is being hunted and being pursued more than how the FBI does (Gabbard, 2004). Yet such realization depicted by his character is never attractive at all. The series end, having him gained his old self and defeating Phil, the person who hunted him and wished death for him. He saved himself and his family. Having a very negative interpretation on Tony Soprano’s character all throughout the television series The Sopranos could be regarded as something that would make the audience think of the real reason why such series is structured and made they way it is seen in television. Audience and even the press people could say that such TV series only depicts what could really happen in real life or what is really there in reality; but what they miss is the point that, the character of Tony is no more than an illustration of a mad man who created his own monsters and then acting like a patriotic knight by fighting with them and exclaiming in the end that he does that for his family; that he should be regarded as a hero well in fact he is the very antagonist in the whole series .
